Best Video Downloader for Windows: What to Look For

A short checklist for choosing a video downloader on Windows 10 or 11, and where VidBlaze fits.

By the VidBlaze team

The Short Answer

The best video downloader for Windows is the one whose limits you can live with and whose behaviour you can check. Look at how it installs, what it contacts, which qualities it offers, what it cannot do, and how it stays up to date. This page lists the questions to ask and the main kinds of tool, without ranking named products. We make VidBlaze, so read the last section with that in mind.

What to Look For

  1. Install and trust. How does it reach your PC? Does the installer carry a code signature, or will Windows SmartScreen warn you? Can you compare a published checksum with the file you downloaded, and is there a scan result with a date? A scan is a snapshot, not a guarantee, so a checksum and a clear explanation of any warning matter more than a claim.
  2. What it contacts. A downloader has to talk to the sites you download from. Ask what else it contacts, whether it needs an account, whether it includes analytics or crash reporting, and whether it explains this in a privacy policy with a list you can read.
  3. Quality options. Check which qualities it offers and who decides: the tool or the site. High resolutions depend on what the video offers. Look for audio-only options, and for how the audio is saved: as the original track or converted to another format.
  4. Limits. Ask whether it can download playlists or several links at once, whether it can pause and resume, whether downloads continue when you close the window, and whether you can choose the save folder. Videos that are private, DRM-protected or need an account generally cannot be downloaded.
  5. Updates. Sites change how they serve video, so a downloader that works today can stop working. Ask how the tool keeps up: does it update its download engine, does it update itself or do you install new versions by hand, and does it say what changed?

The Main Kinds of Video Downloader

These are general trade-offs of each kind, not a judgement of any one product.

KindHow it worksWhat is goodWhat to check
WebsitesYou paste a link into a web page and the site fetches the video for you.Nothing to install, and they work in any browser, including on a PC where you cannot install software. The link goes to the site's operator. Check what the site shows or asks you to install, which qualities it offers, and what it says about privacy.
Browser extensionsAn add-on inside your web browser that adds a download option on video pages.Convenient: it sits where you watch. It runs inside the browser, so look at the permissions it asks for, and remember it is tied to that browser.
Command-line toolsA program you run in a terminal with a link and options. yt-dlp is the best-known example: its own page describes it as a command-line audio/video downloader.Very flexible and open source. You work with typed commands. According to its own documentation, FFmpeg is required to merge separate video and audio files, so you also set that up, and you update the tool yourself, for example with its update command.
Desktop appsA program you install on your PC, with its own window.Point-and-click, a download list, and options such as quality and audio only in one place. You install software, so the install and trust questions above apply. Check what it downloads and contacts, and how it is updated.

Where VidBlaze Fits

VidBlaze for Windows is a desktop app. It is built around yt-dlp: paste a link, pick a quality, and the video is saved to Downloads\VidBlaze. It is free to download and use, needs no account and shows no ads.

Against the checklist above, here is how it stands:

  • Install and trust: the installer is not code-signed, so Windows SmartScreen warns first. The Windows page shows the installer's SHA-256 checksum and a dated scan result, and the install guide explains the warning step by step.
  • What it contacts: no account, and the Windows app does not include analytics or crash reporting. It does contact a few servers to work. The full list, and what it stores on your PC, is in the Privacy Policy.
  • Quality options: a list of qualities per video, depending on what the video and the site offer, and an "Audio only" row that saves the original audio track, not MP3.
  • Limits: one download at a time with a queue, no batch download, no playlists, no subtitles, no choice of save folder, and downloads stop if you close the window. Pause and resume work for most downloads, not for streaming-playlist formats.
  • Updates: VidBlaze looks for a newer yt-dlp from time to time, but it does not install new versions of itself: you run a new installer by hand. See the changelog.

It needs Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit) and is in English only. The developer tested it on clean Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs with YouTube and Rumble, and on a standard (non-admin) account. The first start downloads about 170 MB of tools. For a step-by-step walkthrough, read how to download videos on Windows.

How We Wrote This

The checklist is general and does not rate any product. Statements about VidBlaze come from our own app. The one statement about yt-dlp comes from its own project page.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best video downloader for Windows?

It depends on what you need. Websites need no install, browser extensions sit in your browser, command-line tools such as yt-dlp are flexible but need typed commands, and desktop apps give you a window with a download list. Check how it installs, what it contacts, its quality options, its limits and how it is updated.

Should I trust an online video downloader website?

We cannot say that for any particular site. When you use one, the link you paste goes to the site's operator, so check what the site asks you to install and what it says about privacy.

Does VidBlaze for Windows download playlists?

No. VidBlaze downloads one video per link, one at a time. It has no playlist, channel or batch download.
